What Military Leadership Can Teach Public Transportation Systems About Accountability and Efficiency

Leadership Is About Responsibility

Over the course of my career, I have served in military leadership roles, public office, and now as CEO of DELGO Community Transit. While those environments may seem very different on the surface, I have found that many of the same leadership principles apply across all of them.

One of the biggest lessons the military teaches is that leadership is not about status or position. It is about responsibility. People depend on systems functioning properly, and they depend on leaders who are willing to take ownership when things go right and when things go wrong.

That same mindset is essential in public transportation. Transit systems affect people’s daily lives in very real ways. If a system is unreliable or poorly managed, the impact spreads quickly through the community. People miss work, appointments, and opportunities. Accountability matters because the consequences are real.

Accountability Builds Trust

In the military, accountability is immediate and unavoidable. Everyone understands their role, their responsibilities, and the importance of follow-through. Systems work because individuals are expected to perform consistently and communicate clearly.

I believe public transportation systems benefit from the same approach. Accountability creates trust, both inside the organization and within the community being served.

At DELGO Community Transit, we focus heavily on accountability because reliable service depends on it. Riders need to know they can count on the system. Staff need clear expectations and leadership support. Community partners need confidence that commitments will be met.

Accountability is not about assigning blame. It is about creating a culture where performance matters and improvement is continuous.

Efficiency Starts With Preparation

One of the core lessons from military service is that preparation reduces problems before they happen. In combat environments, preparation can directly affect safety and mission success. In transit operations, preparation affects reliability and efficiency.

Efficient systems are not created by accident. They are built through planning, coordination, and attention to detail.

At DELGO, we focus on making sure operations are organized, communication is clear, and teams understand expectations. That preparation helps reduce delays, confusion, and operational breakdowns.

A well-prepared system responds better to challenges because it already has structure in place. Whether dealing with traffic issues, scheduling adjustments, or unexpected disruptions, preparation creates stability.

Clear Communication Improves Performance

Another leadership principle that transfers directly from military experience to transit operations is communication. In high-pressure environments, communication has to be direct, timely, and easy to understand.

Public transportation systems operate best when communication flows clearly between leadership, staff, and riders. Confusion creates inefficiency. Clear information reduces problems before they escalate.

At DELGO Community Transit, we work hard to improve communication across every level of operations. That includes coordination between teams, updates for riders, and making sure expectations are clearly understood.

Good communication also builds confidence. People are more likely to trust a system when they feel informed and respected.

Discipline Creates Consistency

One thing military service teaches very quickly is the value of discipline. Discipline is not about rigidity. It is about consistency.

In transit operations, consistency matters because riders build their lives around predictable service. They need to know the system will function the same way every day.

Discipline helps organizations maintain standards even during stressful situations. It creates routines, processes, and expectations that keep systems operating smoothly.

At DELGO, we apply that mindset to how we manage operations and service delivery. Consistency is one of the most important ways we build reliability and public trust.

Adapting Under Pressure

One misconception about military leadership is that it is only about structure and following plans exactly as written. In reality, military experience teaches adaptability.

Conditions change quickly, and effective leaders have to make decisions under pressure while staying focused on the larger mission. Public transportation systems face similar challenges every day.

Traffic conditions shift. Service needs change. Unexpected disruptions happen. The ability to adapt quickly without losing operational focus is critical.

At DELGO Community Transit, we work to build systems that are organized but flexible. Structure is important, but adaptability is equally important. A system that cannot adjust to changing conditions will eventually struggle to meet community needs.

Putting the Mission First

One of the strongest lessons I carried from military service into transit leadership is the importance of mission focus. In the military, the mission provides clarity and direction even during difficult situations.

For us at DELGO, the mission is serving the community through reliable transportation. Every operational decision connects back to that purpose.

When organizations lose sight of their mission, efficiency often declines because priorities become unclear. Staying mission-focused helps guide decision-making and keeps teams aligned around shared goals.

That clarity is especially important in public service organizations where the work directly affects people’s lives.

Building Strong Teams

No military unit succeeds because of one individual. Success depends on teamwork, trust, and people understanding how their role contributes to the larger mission.

The same is true in public transportation. Strong transit systems are built by teams that work together effectively under consistent leadership.

At DELGO Community Transit, I believe leadership is about supporting people, setting expectations, and creating an environment where teams can perform at a high level. When people feel connected to the mission and understand their responsibilities, operations become stronger and more efficient.

Looking Ahead

As transportation systems continue to evolve, leadership and accountability will remain essential. Technology and infrastructure are important, but systems ultimately succeed or fail based on how they are managed.

My military experience taught me that efficiency is built through preparation, communication, discipline, and accountability. Those same principles continue to guide how we operate at DELGO Community Transit today.

Public transportation is not just about moving vehicles. It is about serving communities reliably and responsibly. That requires leadership that stays focused on execution, adapts to challenges, and remains accountable to the people who depend on the system every day.

At the end of the day, leadership is about earning trust through consistent action. That lesson applies whether you are serving in uniform or leading a community transit organization.
